Abstract

The Florida State University College of Medicine (FSUCOM) has created a new creative arts journal called HEAL: Humanism Evolving through Arts and Literature. This study was designed to evaluate the influence creative arts publications may have on students, faculty, and staff of a medical school. The investigators randomly selected 17 participants from 25 volunteers in the HEAL project who agreed to be interviewed. They used consensual qualitative research methods to analyze the data, identifying major areas of impact HEAL had on the faculty, students, and staff. Three major themes were identified: Strengthening Professional Relationships (SPR), Educational Enhancement (EE), and Self-Expression (SE). The following sub-themes were identified: SPR—changed perceptions; SE—artistic self-expression; EE—faculty example, and positive reinforcement of career choice. HEAL is perceived as a valuable part of medical education, and the identified themes can be tested in further research.
