Abstract

Based on field-testing results under vacuum preloading, the relations between groundwater level and outflow, surface settlement, degree of vacuum, and pore water pressure are analyzed. The mechanism of groundwater level lowering is presented. The groundwater level lowers rapidly at the beginning of vacuum preloading, which is a two-phase transient flow, and then it becomes relatively stable and can be treated as a steady state of flow. With the groundwater level lowering,a depression-cone is formed in the reinforced area. The degree of vacuum is an important factor for groundwater level lowering. The varying processes of outflow and surface settlement are similar to the one of groundwater level, and there are good fitting relations between these factors.
