Abstract

Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is thought to result from immune-mediated destruction of insulin-producing cells. On manifestation of overt diabetes almost all β islet cells are destroyed as a result of chronic progressive islet inflammmation, which may have gone on for years. Immunointervention in IDDM aims at preventing the final destruction of residual β cells 3, and the First International Symposium on Immunotherapy of the Type 1 Diabetes was called to discuss the state of progress in this area. Other relevant topics such as the standardization of reports on the clinical outcome of trials including a standard definition of remission were also discussed.
