Abstract

Little is known of immunopathologic conditions in invertebrates. The present research produced such a condition in the sea cucumber, Holothuria cinerascens, by blocking the desensitization response to a natural allergen, fish serum. Specifically, a destructive chronic hypersensitive state resulted, involving pathological changes in behavior and anatomy, viz., in muscles and Polian vesicles. These findings confirm the Polian vesicle as an organ of immunologic responsiveness and suggest possible models for a variety of human immunopathologic conditions.
