Abstract

The immune system protects the body against infectious and harmful agents. The body could maintain a state of immune homeostasis, but when the immune systems are defective by cause severe disease. LP‐BM5 murine retroviral infection is characterized by wide and extreme immunosuppression of T/B cell responses. We investigated the immunomodulatory effect of 20% ethanol extracts from Pinus Koraiensis cone peel (PK) in LP‐BM5 (murine leukemia viruses) induced murine ADIS (MAIDS). MICE were divided into 5 groups: NC (normal control), Infection (LP‐BM5 MulV infection), RG (LP‐BM5 MulV infection + dietary supplement of red ginseng extract), PK250 (LP‐BM5 MulV infection + dietary supplement of PK 250 mg/kg), PK500 (LP‐BM5 MulV infection + dietary supplement of PK 500 mg/kg). Ours results that T cell proliferation was decreased and B cell proliferation was increased by LP‐BM5 MulV infection, but dietary supplement of PK were increased T cell proliferation and were decreased B cell proliferation. Dietary supplement of PK prevented T helper (Th)1 cytokine (IL‐2, IFN‐ν)/Th2 cytokine (IL‐4, IL‐6, IL‐10, TNF‐α) imbalance in LP‐BM5 MuLV‐infected mice. Dietary supplement of PK caused defense against decrease in natural killer cell activity and phagocytosis induced by LP‐BM5 MuLV‐infection. In conclusion, PK has the immunomodulatory effect in LP‐BM5 MuLV‐induced MAIDS.
