Abstract
To write a textbook of immunology seems an almost hopeless endeavor nowadays. Such is the speed of progress in this field that, as the ink begins to dry, abundant and fascinating new knowledge emerges, and the books drift inexorably toward joyless outdatedness. Only a few manage to blend time-resistant concepts with new information in a balanced fashion. <i>Immunology</i>by J. F. Bach and collaborators was one such book when its first edition (1976—French, 1978— English) appeared, and it certainly remains so in this second edition (1979—French, 1982—English). Add to this its thoroughness, its gallic lucidity of exposition, and its successful counterpoint of basic and clinical material, and you have what is possibly the best textbook of immunology presently available. The translation (and modification) is excellent, yet, surprisingly, no fair credit is given to whoever was responsible for it (Mrs Bach and R. S. Swenson?). This new and enlarged (+25%) edition
