Abstract

We induced macrophage suppression with colloidal carbon in monkeys to evaluate the role of the macrophage in bacterial pyelonephritis. The disease was more severe, with prolonged bacteriuria and renal abscess formation, but no more severe scarring than usual. This appeared to be due to the suppression of phagocytosis that occurred, since though the humoral response was delayed it did occur, and the usual response in regional lymph nodes was found.
