Abstract
This book is a collection of articles contributed by a group of experimental and clinical immunologists. It begins with (i) a discussion of the theories which attempt to explain antibody responses, quickly moves on to (ii) a review of the ontogeny of immunoglobulins and complement components in man, considering the fetal and maternal contributions to each system, swings around to (iii ) an interesting review of the phylogeny of immunity which attempts, with some success, to show the relevance of this approach to an understanding of the immune system of "higher" vertebrates such as us, and then breaks into (iv) a particularly well written and illustrated article on what is known about the immunology of mammalian reproduction with particular focus on mothers' tolerance of their embryos who can be regarded as hemi-allografts, immunologically competent themselves for varying periods of their intra-uterine lives.
