Abstract

SUMMARY Using sheep, guinea-pigs and mice as test animals, the protective effect 0/9 straws of Cl. chauvoei was studied. The animals showed a greater degree of resistance to challenge by the homologous strain than by heterologous strains. This effect was most evident at the lower levels of immunity and the greater the level of immunity the more cross-protection occurred. Some strains had a wider protective spectrum against heterologous challenge than did others. Vaccines to be used in the field should be examined carefully for their capacity to produce antibodies which enable the immunized animal to resist challenge by a wide range of strains.
