Abstract

Immunologic evidence of penicillin hypersensitivity can frequently be found in patients experiencing penicillin reactions. There is no good correlation between positive skin tests and positive hemagglutinations, each occurring independently of the other. There exist instances of penicillin hypersensitivity based on immune mechanisms other than skin sensitizing antibody, a fact that emphasizes the limitations of the use of skin tests alone for diagnosing allergic conditions. The hemagglutination technique has a high degree of specificity for the penicillin molecule.
