Abstract

Autoantibodies and Antigenicity of the KidneyIn 1939 Schwentker and Comploier67 started a new era in the development of experimental nephritis when they produced "autoantibodies" to rabbit kidneys. They immunized rabbits with homologous rabbit-kidney extract that had previously been incubated with streptococcal or staphylococcal toxin. By this means they were able to demonstrate complement-fixing antibodies to normal rabbit kidney. When homologous rabbit kidneys without the addition of toxin were used as antigen, no antibodies were produced. Unfortunately, they did not report histologic studies in the kidneys of these animals.In 1941 Parks and Shanks68 attempted to make rabbit kidneys "autoantigenic" . . .
