Abstract

In the green macroalga Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Link, only one form of α-1,4-glucan phosphorylase was detected by activity staining. By immunogold labeling and transmission electron microscopy, this form of phosphorylase was found to be localized in the pyrenoid of the chloroplast of the algal cell. No specific phosphorylase label was associated with the stroma of the chloroplast, the nucleus or the rest of the cell. The possible role of this pyrenoidal phosphorylase in starch metabolism is discussed.
