Abstract

Summary Sera from cattle in the hyperacute, acute, chronic and recovered stages of contagious bovine pleuropneumonia were fractionated on Sephadex G200 and DEAE cellulose columns and the specifc complement fixing and agglutinating antibodies in the original serum and in the fractions were determined. Three peaks were obtained on Sephadex G200 fractionation. The major constituents of these in order of elution were IgM, IgG and albumin. Globulin IgA was not detected. Specific complement fixing antibody first appeared infractions from the IgM peak and persisted there throughout the course of the disease. Complement fixing antibody was present infractions from the IgG peak in most affected animals but a severe case, and a very mild case which completely recovered, did not show it. Agglutinating antibody occurred early in the disease in all animals but in most its presence was transitory and confined to the IgM fractions. The complement fixing and agglutinating antibodies were shown by absorption studies to be different.
