Abstract

THE presence of insulin-binding antibodies in the sera of insulin-resistant diabetics has been shown by a large number of investigators1. It has also been shown by Berson et al.2 and Kalant et al.3 that using paper electrophoresis the binding was mainly in the γ-globulin, while using free-boundary electrophoresis the binding was mainly in the β-globulin. The disadvantage of using paper as a supporting medium is discussed in work now in course of publication4. In view of the differences of opinion as to which of the serum proteins is responsible for the binding of insulin it was decided to apply the techniques of immuno-electrophoresis with subsequent autoradiography to the study of diabetic sera.
