Abstract

The involvement of autoimmune processes in certain ophthalmologic diseases has long been discussed by many investigators. Recently, D'Ermo 1 has further stressed the potential importance of autoimmune phenomena in pathological conditions of the lens. It is generally agreed that the injection of heterologous or homologous lens extracts evokes the production of circulating antibodies, a conclusion which has been extensively documented in the recent review of Halbert and Mansky. 2 However, the demonstration of antibody formation following the injection of autologous lens antigens is less readily achieved. Muller 3 reported that simple trauma of the lens in rabbits induced an immune response, but these results were not confirmed in the experiments of Lyda and Lippincott. 4 However Uhlenhuth and Handel 5 also succeeded in demonstrating autoimmunization of guinea pigs with lens material.
