Abstract

Macaca mulatta sensitized by drug-treated Plasmodium knowlesi infection became only partially immune. They suffered long-lasting chronic infections and their immunity was largely ineffective against another strain of P. knowlesi. Monkeys sensitized with dead schizont-infected cells in Freund's complete adjuvant, providing they survived the initial parasitemia after challenge, rapidly cleared their infection to give an immunity also effective against the other strain of P. knowlesi, although not against other species of Plasmodium. Sensitization with dead parasitized cells in Freund's incomplete adjuvant was without protective effect.
