Abstract

SUMMARY A staphylococcal vaccine containing α-haemolysin, coagulase and leucocidin was shown to confer immunity in goats against experimental mastitis produced by Staphylococcus aureus Compton strain 201. This immunity was equal to that conferred by a preparation containing α-haemolysin toxoid, whole killed staphylococci and an aluminium hydroxide adjuvant, that is, the ‘adjuvant cell-toxoid’ described by Derbyshire (1960). A greater degree of immunity was conferred by α-lysin-coagulase-leucocidin than by adjuvant cell-toxoid against challenge by Staph. aureus Compton strain BB, but this strain did produce severe mastitis in some of the vaccinated animals. The reason for this irregular response could not be found by examining serological results.
