Abstract
As in many terms used in the fields of Political Science, International Relations or associated fields, there is yet to be a universal definition of democracy agreed to by every all scholars, however, every definition given by different scholars point to the fact the democracy is the peoples' government in which decide on who governs them per time. For instance, the common definition of democracy by The Athenians of the ancient Greece and which has been popularised over time describes democracy as "the government of the people by the people for the people", this was of course re-echoed by the former President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln in an unmistakable tone. This paper examines the nature and the practice of democracy in Africa and concludes with the dilemma of democracy in the continent stating how immunity has encouraged corruption among the political elites and poverty among the masses.
