Abstract

Carcinoma of the esophagus is a disease that shows very striking geographic variations in incidence (1). The highest incidence rates are along the eastern coast of Africa, northern coast of France, southern coast of the Caspian Sea, and in several countries in Asia which comprise the Asian esophageal carcinoma belt. In most countries, the disease is more prevalent in males than in females. In addition, esophageal cancer occurs consistently among the poor in most areas of the world, where the diet is often restricted and nutritional imbalance is common.
