Abstract

The ameba immobilization reaction was studied in sera from persons with hepatic abscess, acute intestinal amebiasis, chronic intestinal amebiasis, clinical pictures suggestive of chronic intestinal amebiasis but with negative fecal examinations, and without amebiasis. It was found that the greatest amount of immobilization occurred at 30 minutes and also that heating of the sera at 56 ° C for 30 minutes did not materially affect the results. The immobilization reaction was positive in 84% of the 95 cases of confirmed amebiasis and in only 18% of the 82 persons without amebiasis. It appears that this reaction is useful in the diagnosis of amebiasis.
