Abstract

Alkali-activated slag cement (AASC) was studied as a host matrix for the immobilization of simulated high-level wastes. Experimental results show that, with a waste loading as high as 25%, AASC waste form presents high compressive strength (65–100 MPa), low porosity (less than 10%) and low leach rates (10 −5 and 10 −6 g/cm 2d for Cs and Sr, respectively). The mechanism of encapsulation of nuclides in AASC waste form was also studied.
