Abstract
SYNROC formulations developed for the immobilization of high-level wastes from the civilian power program can be modified to accommodate abnormally high sodium levels in the wastes. The addition of niobium or light rare earth oxides to the inert additives in the SYNROC process results in a wasteform where sodium is immobilized in the perovskite phase (CaTiO 3) as either NaNbO 3 or Na 0.5 (REE) 0.5 TiO 3 components in solid solution. The latter alternative offers better cost benefits.
