Abstract

The present essay provides an overview of the notion of migration from the perspective of its appropriation by the French theater in different social and political contexts. The study focuses on the theater practiced by migrant workers in the 1960s and 1970s. We highlight the political role of the migrants´ native language and culture, with an emphasis on the role of the playwright Kateb Yacine. In the pedagogical context, the investigation describes the interventions made by Augusto Boal and CEDTITADE during the seventies and eighties. We conclude with some notes on the theme, as portrayed by the contemporary theater, with special focus on the Avignon festival.
