Abstract

First-trimester miscarriage occurs in approximately 11% of pregnancies. Standard treatment regimens include medical management, using mifepristone with or without misoprostol, expectant management, or surgical evacuation. Previous trials have shown medical and expectant management, followed by surgical evacuation in the case of treatment failure, to be safe as well as less expensive than surgical evacuation alone. However, no studies have compared medical treatment to expectant management followed by medical treatment in the case of initial treatment failure. This study was a randomized controlled trial to compare medical management to expectant management followed by medical management if necessary.
