Abstract

(Int J Obstet Anesth. 2017;31:5–1) Minor and transient neurological deficits following childbirth have been reported in the literature with an incidence between 1 in 100 and 1 in 500. Most are obstetric palsies involving the lumbar nerve roots and sacral plexus. While a retrospective study reported an association between neuraxial blocks and transient postpartum neurological deficits, a large prospective study did not find an association. Overall, data regarding transient neurological deficits associated with childbirth are limited. The aim of this prospective, observational study was to quantify postpartum neurological deficits as well as delineate the types of deficits that occur.
