Abstract

One operator placed 126 Tytin amalgam restorations in small Class II cavities in the permanent teeth of 27 patients. All the proximal cavity margins were finished subgingivally, and any marginal staining present was removed. Half the restoration pairs were left as-carved, the other 63 were immediate-polished after 8 minutes using small fine geenstones, then zirconium-silicate paste, and wet whiting in unwebbed rubber cups. Direct and indirect clinical assessments were made at baseline, 6 and 12 months, using several methods. Both groups of restorations showed some slight deterioration during the study, especially the immediate-polished group. However, at 12 months, all restorations and gingival conditions were still satisfactory, and any initial baseline differences between the two groups had largely disappeared, making it very difficult to distinguish them clinically.
