Abstract

1. Abrupt decrease or increase of salinity is followed by an immediate drop in incorporation of 3H phenylalanine into the TCA-insoluble protein fraction, but no major change in oxygen consumption rate. 2. Decrease in salinity at constant osmolarity is not followed by lower incorporation. 3. Recovery from osmotic swelling after salinity decrease coincides with reestablishment of a new stable rate of incorporation, which is only 50–70% of the original rate. 4. Inhibition of translation with continued proteolysis could provide free amino acids for cell volume control.
