Abstract
The relationship between the immanant and the Schur symmetric function is examined. Two expressions for the immanant are given in terms of the determinant. Generalisations include Foata and Zeilbergerâs $\beta$-extension of the MacMahon Master theorem. The relationships to some little known results of Littlewood and to idempotents constructed by Young are given.
