Abstract
Simple order-of-magnitude expressions derived from the forward-scattering small-angle approximation show that the scattering modulation transfer function (MTF) contributes insignificantly to the overall atmospheric MTF in most practical imaging applications except for precipitation, ice-crystal clouds, and some rare advection-fog or high-wind desert storm events with particles in the size range of tens of micrometers.
