Abstract
Purpose: The osteochondral interface has been identified as a key structure in the development of osteoarthritis. As the disease develops, subchondral bone thickens and large perforations appear. Furthermore, the bone mineral quality is reduced and bone cysts appear, alongside a breakdown in cartilage matrix and proteoglycan loss. To investigate this phenomenon in the progression of OA we propose using preclinical investigations of small animal models with contrast enhanced micro-computed tomography (microCT) in a longitudinal manner.
