Abstract

The surfaces of crushed salt /NaCl/ grains were equilibrated with36Cl− to produce a radioactive rim that was imaged by autoradiography. The tagged salt was compacted at pressures up to 138 MPa /20 000 psi/ for as long as 5 d to induce flow. Autoradiographs of the pressed salt show that plastic deformation /creep/ rather than pressure dissolution was the dominant compaction process under these short duration experimental conditions.
