Abstract

The ribs are evaluated by radiologists of all subspecialties. A recent informal review of intradepartmental consults by the musculoskeletal radiology section at our institution revealed that approximately 20% of all queries involved the ribs. To educate radiologists further, an organized review of the rib in medical imaging was performed. The aims of this article are to expose radiologists to important clinical conditions in which the rib can be involved and to provide essential information to guide diagnosis and management. In the event that biopsy is indicated, we characterize three types of lesions and provide techniques for maximizing diagnostic yield.
