The con‑ cept behind DECT is based on the principle that compounds with different atomic weights will absorb the x‑ray beam by different degrees. The two different data sets are subsequently analyzed by specialized software that allows for accurate separation of materials from one another, in other words, monosodium urate from adjacent soft tissues and calcium.
