Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores the influence of imagination in human evolution and its role in the emergence of human culture. It explains how approaching imagination as an evolved dimension of human consciousness requires complementing philosophical understanding with insights from other disciplines. Human cognitive evolution saw the emergence of people’s capacity for ‘seeing-as’ alongside inner representation and hypothetical thinking. From a modern perspective, prehistoric artefacts such as cave paintings, sculptures, and toys appear to express the raw vitality of early human imagination. The chapter highlights how imagination has allowed human beings to amplify, transform, and expressively reflect on their experiences of living while also enabling a symbolic humanization of the world.
