Abstract

The imaginary part of the optical potential, which shows shell effect, is estimated for Fe56 and Cd112. The expectation value is ΣjjjG2 V2 I2 x [W'/(E1/2 + E j - Ej-ej )2 + W2] nj, where Ej, etc., are single particle energies with pairing energy of state j, etc.; nj is the number of particles in state j; V is the strength of the nuclear force; and I is the orbital overlap integral. For Cd, W is about 1/3 the value for Fe.
