Abstract

This research of the style of the Brazilian poet Alberto da Cunha Melo is based on the stylistic methodology and aims at contributing with the studies of this author, as well as giving descriptive information about some expressive uses of the Portuguese language. Firstly, I discuss some theoretical and methodological questions related to my kind of reading, such as image, text, style, form and sense. Secondly, I offer a panoramical approach of the author’s style, focusing some stylistic recourses in texts selected to represent the whole poetry, which was developed throughout more than four decades. Although, in this second moment, I intend to present an overview of Alberto da Cunha Melo’s work, the stylistic reading (on account of its interest in observing how form and content are associated) always tend to focus the details. Thirdly, I analyse more accurately four poems, each one from a different phase of production. His poetry can be divided in four different periods, concerning the techniques applied to the form. In a final chapter, I register the main stylistic characteristics of this writer. Even though I consider different aspects of the use of language, regarding how the meaning effects are obtained, I devote special attention to a technique taken as one of the most significant of his style: the reverberation of image, produced by the repetition of sounds, words, syntactic structures or ideas, creating the effect of concision and emphasis.
