Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate issues related to body image (concern, dissatisfaction, distortion) and risk behavior for eating disorders in individuals self-designated transsexual in the city of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Each participant filled out a questionnaire containing open and closed questions about the socioeconomic, demographic, health and lifestyle. Anthropometric measurements were also collected following the protocol of the Ministry of Health. Then, the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), Adonis Complex Questionnaire (QCA), the Figure of Silhouettes Scale (EFS) and the Body Shape Questionaire (BSQ) were applied. The results revealed that most of the participants demonstrated concern with body image (80%) and presented body image distortion (91%), dissatisfaction with their body image (81,9%) and desire to have a smaller body than the current one (77,8%). The risk for eating disorders was present in 27,3% of transsexuals. The high proportion of participants with body image problems and risk behaviors for eating disorders reinforces the need to seek strategies to improve the quality of life and health care of this specific population. This group requires special attention, once there is still little evidence on how to approach this population in clinical practice.
