Abstract

AbstractThe image force on an external ion moving parallel to a metal surface is studied within the hydrodynamic model. Expressions for its longitudinal and transversal components are derived. Retardation effects, spatial dispersion, and diffuseness of the electron density at the surface are included. Results of the longitudinal component of the image force and of the corresponding stopping power are reported numerically for different electron densities. They show a pronounced dependence on the velocity of the moving ion.
