Abstract

In this article, the author reviews Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle, a unique wordless picture book of friendship, movement, and music. Included is a brief discussion of Johann Strauss II and The Blue Danube Waltz, Idle’s musical inspiration for the book. The author shares related general music activities using Strauss’s popular Viennese waltz. Created for young children 3 through 6 years old, the activities address beat, rhythm, triple meter, and timbre through listening, moving, and playing instruments.
