Abstract

A motor-vehicle noise survey was performed to assist the development of the proposed Illinois motor-vehicle noise regulations. In-use A-weighted sound levels were measured by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency during vehicular passbys. The motor vehicles were separated into five classes: heavy trucks (GVW: over 24 000 lb); light-medium trucks (GVW: 8000–14 000 lb); cars and light trucks (GVW: under 8000 lb); and motorcycles. Sound levels were measured for three modes of vehicle operation: acceleration from rest; under 35 mph cruise; and over 35 mph cruise. Statistical distributions for each vehicle type and operating mode are presented and compared to the proposed Illinois motor-vehicle regulations.
