Abstract

ABSTRACTThe National Measurement Institute’s (NMIA) Australian Forensic Drug Laboratory (AFDL) conducts chemical profiling of high volume drugs, including heroin, cocaine, methylamphetamine and ecstasy (MDMA). The aim of this work is to provide strategic and tactical intelligence to law enforcement agencies to assist in their endeavour to disrupt drug trafficking. Over the last decade, the NMIA’s Illicit Drug Profiling Program has evolved in its chemical testing capability to adapt to the changes in the drug landscape, in technology and in the needs of law enforcement. As critical issues continue to arise, the question of how we deliver relevant and timely chemical intelligence to law enforcement is of paramount importance. This paper will discuss how the implementation of new technologies, an emphasis on research, continued process improvements and being adaptable to our surrounding environment have ensured the drug profiling program remains relevant and delivers timely intelligence.
