Abstract

The test of a life: an Eric Hobsbawm profile takes a look at the figure of Eric Hobsbawm, retracing the main stages of his intellectual biography: from his middle- European background to his university education in Cambridge; from his involvement with the Communist Party to his studies of social banditry and the British working class; from his particular and original blend of Marxism to his analyses of capitalism and the concept of revolution (in the four volumes of Ages); from an evaluation of his work as an historian of society and culture to the reasons for his influence on contemporary historiography.
