Abstract

According to Gianfranco Di Pietro, the landscape is the essential dimension to understand the land morphology and development of a territory towards planning its future. His perspective on the landscape is “the summary and synthetic dimension" in which we can read the structure of a site: geology and morphology, settlement system, agro-forestry structures. All aspects are, always, related and investigated by interlinking historical-archival sources with field observations and economic dynamics. This research method – combined with his technical capacity in planning – allows for towns and country plans to steer the development of regions towards the attainment of a sustainable future with respect to cultural and natural heritage conservation and protection.
