Abstract

Casarano is a town in the Apulian province of Lecce. In the suburb of this town, upper a little hill, is located the Sanctuary of Madonna della Campana, built in the 17th century. This sanctuary represents the center of a traditional feast, celebrated in the Sunday and Monday after Easter, characterized by particular ritual forms. This work analyzes the local traditions concerning the Madonna della Campana, the ritual symbolism of the festival and the meaning of rituals and symbols in the context of ancient rural and contemporary society.
