Abstract
The present paper aims to contribute to the current wide debate on the valorisation and the disposal of public real estate, with particular regard to reuse strategies for former prisons. These often consist of buildings with relevant historical and architectural values, located in historical urban centres or in protected natural areas. The study concerns the former prisons heritage in Sardinia, considering some former prisons in Cagliari, Oristano, Sassari and Tempio Pausania. The typologies of Sardinian prisons were analyzed taking in consideration the development of the correctional architecture in the international scenario. In particular, the study is based both on the comparison of analogous models in Europe and America, and on some own architectural features: volume, spatial distribution, relationship between internal spaces and openings, internal paths, construction techniques, etc. Moving from the typological analysis of the case studies, the paper focuses on some construction techniques which emerged from the archival research. In particular, the author outlines how the use of stone and wood generally prevails, representing a common feature for the different territorial contexts of Sardinia.
