Abstract

The matter of food security has a complex nature and is governed by regulations that seek to take into account and balance a varied set of social and economic interests. Since 2011, following the enactment of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for food safety of domestic products and imported supplies. The US producers and importers are required to develop and implement plans for prevention and control of food safety risks and the FDA may conduct periodic inspections and arrange the recall of non-compliant products. All this involves the application of a complex but efficient food traceability system.
