Abstract

Summary. A new children's personality inventory—the J.M.P.I.—designed to measure extraversion and neuroticism was administered to 261 male and 248 female Canadian high school children and to 304 male and 230 female English comprehensive school children. The only difference in mean scores obtained in comparison of cultures and sex was in mean Neuroticism score for sex. Both the Canadian and English girls obtained higher mean N scores than Canadian and English boys.Item analyses suggested differences between males and females and between Canadian and English children in the expression of extraversion and neuroticism. There is a suggestion that acquiescence, as measured by the number of ‘Same’ responses, is greater among English school children than among Canadian school children.
