Abstract
Abstract Three trials were conducted at Lincoln to examine the effect on lucerne growth of sowing it with cover crops. When lucerne was established with barley sown at 56 kg/ha, yield was restored to that of clear-seeded lucerne after one to four harvests. Yield of vndersown lucerne was higher with irrigation, and with the lower cover crop seeding rate. Lucerne sown with spring-sown barley yielded more than lucerne sown with winter-sown wheat. Weeds were less competitive than cover crops. The mean grain yield of barley sown at 56 kg/ha with lucerne equalled the mean yield loss of undersown lucerne.
