Abstract
Recently concern for long period ground motion that has predominant period of more than a few seconds has been increasing. For example, a sloshing phenomenon of petroleum tanks in the Tokachi-oki earthquake (2003), resonance of high-rise buildings in the Great East Japan earthquake (2011) and so on were caused by the long period ground motion. In high-rise buildings, elevators are important vertical transportation equipment. However elevators for high-rise buildings have many components that have long natural period such as a main rope, and resonance of these kinds of components is apprehended. Therefore this paper deals with investigation regarding seismic response of elevators in high-rise buildings against long-period ground motion. The investigation is conducted from the viewpoint of response of rope, impact load by rope, strength of rails and gap between buildings.
