Abstract

Abstract The mean duration of oestrus in two-tooth and mixed-age Merino ewes was 10.8 and 12.8 hours respectively (not significant, range 2–24 hours). Live weight of ewes also had no significant effect on the duration of oestrus. Ram-seeking activity was higher in mixed-age ewes than in two-tooths (P < 0.01) and was also increased in groups with a higher mean live weight (P < 0.01). An increase in paddock size reduced the percentage of ewes in both age-groups which were mated by tethered rams (P < 0.01).
